Technology and Race in the Lithography of Currier and Ives

Currier and Ives often used technology as a positive motif in their lithography, where it stood for progress and success. This enthusiastic view of technology was closely tied with ideas of manifest destiny, American success, and what it meant to be an citizen of the United States. Native Americans and African Americans were not included in this narrative by Currier and Ives or others, however. Use the images below to analyze how they accomplished this. You may want to first review the models in the Learn portion of this site.
